Final Fantasy may live up to the swan song title it originally could have been.

Ok as you know I'm a HUGH fan of Final Fantasy and I saw on the news ticker for G4's 'Attack Of The Show' today something that made me extremely angry. Here is the exact bit of news the ticker had,

Square Enix President Yoichi Wada told EGDE that "Final Fantasy XIII" could mark the LAST traditional JRPG in the franchise as the company may be looking forward to create new "'Next-Generation' forms of play." "Whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen," said Wada

Now as you can see from this statement that the Final Fantasy franchise may end with XIII being that last good Final Fantasy. Now considering what other next gen RPG's are like I think that this is both a stupid move and the death of Square-Enix's fan base. I'm not saying that the current next gen RPG's are bad... but just aren't as appealing as the traditional JRPG's and the Japanese consumers may be like me and are ready to storm the company with pitch forks and torches after this statement. I am disappointed in this decision because Final Fantasy's (other then XI and XII) have had good stories and gameplay, but a change in either or both can really do damage to Square-Enix's image and I think this decision was influenced by western RPG developers accusing them of being out dated. I hope that this statement made by Yoichi Wada is a load of BS but I've never seen any bit of news on G4 to be BS.

So if you love Final Fantasy, your love may fade once Final Fantasy XV comes out if it already hasn't with the badly thought out Final Fantasy XIV. Final Fantasy XIII will release on March 9 and may be the last Final Fantasy you purchase so lets hope the series goes out with a bang and not a fart. Off topic Mistwalker still makes traditional JRPG's and there new project is back on track but probably will be released in 2011 but we'll have to wait and see.
