Retro Review : Batteltoads

The more I do these Retro Reviews I realise that the Nintendo Entertainment System may have been my favourite console, but I'm not 100% sure yet. Today's Retro Review is on Batteltoads, a game that proves that difficulty can really expand the life of a game or shorten the life of the cartridge... well maybe not the last one.

Battletoads is a NES game with a story kinda thing, but it's not very important. Some people have considered Battletoads as one of the hardest games and I agree that it's hard and frustrating, but it makes finishing it all the sweeter! The game is a hybrid game of platformer and beat 'em up. As you proceed through a stage, you get locked in a small section until you defeat all the enemies before you get to advance. Think of this game as being like Golden Axe, because it's the closest to this game. The game was created to rival the NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Battletoads characters do look a lot like the TMNT but don't uses weapons until found in the game, usually from enemies. The game has a fair few levels with some that are so difficult that even I broke several NES controllers in frustration. Despite all the of the glitches, the frustrating difficulty and the fact that in 2 player mode you can accidentally beat each other up and it can happen more often then you'd like, Battletoads is a game that will make you determined to finish it and once completed you will scream in victory and try it again.

Battletoads is a game that will test skill and patience's, but finishing it will make you feel like every new game is beneath you. As a person who both finished it and plays new games I sometime do get that feeling, but there are some games that will end up humbling you. Unfortunately I doubt we'll ever get to download it on the Wii because it's a RAREWARE game like Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie, but I wouldn't be worried because only truly skilled players should play this.
